Loose Back Wheel.

Second time in recent days...

Cleaning the wheel rim & spokes a couple of weeks ago I noticed the rear wheel sliding side to side on the axle, so I removed it to investigate. Seems that the bearing retaining screw had come loose even though it is a left hand thread. I tightened it up only to find that it quickly come undone again, so this time its a squirt of thread lock. Is this a common problem although it has not happened on my other A10?

Best to check yours as this completely surprised me, thanks to regular cleaning, a lot to be said for that.

Yes it 's a common problem and can easily happen if you don't use loctite. Also you can buy the tool to tighten the retainer on ebay and that helps get it tight enough.

I've never experienced that before and I am running four BSA's with the same type of hub as yours.  

Anyway, I'm guessing that maybe the threads are worn.  If I remember correctly the retainer is aluminium with very fine threads.  Even though you have used thread lock it might be a good idea to get a replacement item and replace the troublesome one if and when required.

I have had this problem happen to my SR and it also happened another I Kknow of
Even though I had made a good fitting peg spanner for it, held this in the vice and used the wheel as a lever
In my hub there is a wee hole to take a locking pin, fitted this and no further problems

As John noted, a very small hole and a split pin ( Or R clip) is the definative answer.
Bearing retainers seem only to come in 2 catagories.
Corroded in place and impossible to remove without breaking it
or
sloppy with just about all of the threads worn off.
