Digital Tacho with Magneto
« on: 09.07. 2022 07:37 »
I'd like to fit a cheap digital tachometer. (I don't have the timing cover tacho drive).
There are lots of cheapos online, but what's the deal re: triggering and wiring, - I think most are triggered by the coil.
But what about a magneto setup?

http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/tach.html is quite a good read if thinking of a wire wrap round a plug lead - which is probably easiest IF it will work reliably.
That's an aero-site, but same applies except for the shielding on aircraft HT parts to eliminate radio interference. There's a link there to all sorts of instruments that might do, analog ones at that, but not sure how they are for 'cheap'.

Otherwise, I think it's Hall effect sensors and a bit of thought as to 'where to put', but above my pay grade. Easier, I think, with magnetos with external coils than with rotating ones for reasons to do with interference (most modern aircraft mags are static coil / magnetic rotor I'm pretty sure, although older ones used mags like ours).

My long-late mate KenF, who used to post on here years ago, successfully made one for his Vincent Rapide by making a disc, with black and white sections, that sat outboard the contact breaker on his KVF mag, on an extension of the centre screw that holds it on, with an optical sensor to pick up the rotation. He then made a matching 'chronometric' dial and casing which had a lot of people fooled as it looked really 'right'. It worked well for a while  . . .  but I fear I no longer have the diagrams, or specs of the bits he used. It was a long time ago.

Most lawn mowers use the same wrap around induction pick up
Some are self energising while others have fancy batteries that are near impossible to replace.
To get an accurate reading you need one that can be set for 2 strokes as the 4 stroke mowers all run wasted sparks
Up side is most also record runnin hours .

I tried a wrap around the plug lead type on the Rotax engined special I built a few years ago. Didn't have any joy with it at all.

S'funny isn't it, seems such as simple little bit of technology... But obviously not so easy.

So no probs getting a good 'trigger' signal? Do you program it for no of cylinders?

Yes you mess with the buttons for one spark per rotation or every second rotation.

The ones I had don’t have a listing on eBay now.  Looked identical to that.

The one in the link mentions a second wire, for “earth.”   Mine didn’t have that, so far as I remember.

I use one of those on my generator (single cylinder 4 stroke), works like a charm.........not sure how long the battery will last though, its a sealed unit  *eek*...

I wonder if theres something that looks a little less like an err -kitchen implement :-0
I'll see if there's anything circular with a needle that might do the job.

I bought one like this to put on my lathe. I haven't done that yet. A sensor reacts to a magnet passing it. The display requires a 12v supply. It cost <£20.

I'm not clever enough to know how to have the display converted to an analogue dial;  in principle a digital to analogue conversion

Must be cheap .

Well, 'cheap' is a relative term eh?
