'47 A7 exhaust cam follower guides
« on: 27.07. 2022 02:50 »
Looking for the dread 'stuff that goes in the hole' between the intake valves.  A soon discarded design.  I can't imagine why.  I guess they are half circles with a plate holding them in position?
The Roy Bacon Restoration manual shows then in one drawing without description.

Hope this helps. BSA A7 1949. Longstroke crankcase.

Centre Tappet guide block and retaining plate as fitted, and views of the guide removed, revealing wear to the cam followers.

The centre (exhaust) tappet block comes free when the cases are split, this is why they get lost. The inlet guides are a press fit into the crankcase. Threaded top enables a puller to be used to draw them out. Heat is a must to avoid damage on something that has been in place for 70+ years. Inlet followers foul on the crankcase, and cannot be withdrawn from below.....bugger.

Also shown is the rare retaining plate for the guides. This is fitted last after the guides have been aligned and the cases pulled together.

Well, that's depressing.  Chance of finding one of the seems pretty slim.  Not an easy piece to make.

A competent machinist should be able to knock one out in a morning. As for material, what are originals made of? Cast iron for its lube retaining characteristics, or steel? If the latter, stainless may be a good alternative, though harder to machine.

Time for a reality check and a cautionary tale.

My Longstoke project has been on the back burner for matter of years. The problem is the Camshaft. You see those followers? Well the cams are just as bad, it's a basic design fault with poor lubrication....the later design has a trough, into which the lobes dip, and although cams and followers on the later engine still wear, it is not to the same extent as this early version.

Brandis,  as a new member to the Forum, you may not have heard the following fairytale.

With the increasing interest in old bikes, Wassell  (the UK  wholesalers for bike parts), bought up the rights to the Hepolite brand, from AE, the name we trusted way back. Modern Hepolite parts have no relation to the old company, only the name.

For many years A7 Longstroke Camshafts were unobtainable. Wassel commissioned  new A7 and A10 Camshafts for their product portfolio. Now the later A7 engines share the same Camshaft, the A10 type, but by a twist of fate, the A7 Cams were made to the Longstroke spec. Folks ordering an A7 cam got just just that, Longstroke type, which does not fit the later engine.

So the UK retail market is full of high priced Longstroke A7 cams, and with a low demand...I'm waiting for the fire sale.

That central tappet guide is very similar to a pre unit Triumph type, but the genuine part turns up on ebay uk from time to time, with sellers ignorant of what it actually is.

Thank you Swarfy !    This is exactly why, the first thing I did after unloading the bike was to re-connect with the Forum, this time in the A7 - A10 section.
