Bottom magneto bolt - tearing one's hair out!

Just in case you're tearing your hair out trying to fit the bottom mag bolt... The first thing you have to do is check the threaded end is the same profile as the original. Pattern parts supplied by 'You know Who' have a stubbier threaded end that fouls the magneto body so it is impossible to line it up with the stud. See pic. I reprofile these on the lathe before sending them out.

I bought the bottom long bolt from Baxter Cycle USA it worked fine ....previous owner left the bolt off

Funnily enough, my bottom bolt always unscrews with the stud attached.  To refit, I put the stud through the maggie hole before offering it up to the engine, then wiggle it all about until the thread takes.

Ah yes. I wanted to change the original bottom mag bolt/nut because it was rusty. When I undid it the stud started to unscrew and the shoulder on the long bolt/nut came up against the mag without the stud fully extracting. I was not willing to take the mag off just for that so I retightened the bolt/nut and changed it when I stripped the whole engine down for another reason.

Is that item a bolt or an extended nut?

Probably an extended nut GB.  With the maggie, I find I have to undo the nuts and pull the maggie back until all the nuts aren't fouled and will come away cleanly - this includes the top two.

I use socket head bolts ....And The "Allen" drive with the bevelled tip that can be used at a slight angle

I have had this problem and if you machine even a few thou too much the bolt breaks when you tighten the damned thing

The long magneto bolt on my 62 SR was broken off at the head and it was a bugger to get the mag off. I ended up having to remove the timing cover and inner cas and had to drill the stud out. Luckily I did not damage the original threads . Plan on replacing the stud in the case and make sure it cannot unscrew out by coating the threads with JB weld or similar. will check both of the 2 long bolts that I do have to make sure there is no mag fouling. Thanks for the tip .

blue loctite will do the trick not JB weld

Do I have to remove the primary drive including the inner primary to reinstall the bottom nut when reinstalling the magneto? I do have the factory long extended not but can't get it to line up with the stud. Fingers won't fit and it is also hidden from eyes.

You shouldn't have to. If you stand on the left of the bike and look over the seat, with your head against the tank, you can just see the edge of the stud that it screws onto. Hold the end of the extended nut in your left hand, use the middle finger of your right hand to slide under the magneto, from the back, and guide the end of the nut onto the stud whilst maintaining your eyeline on the stud as mentioned before.
