Oil Strainer
« on: 14.04. 2023 14:20 »
My oil pick up at the bottom of the crankcase is out of alignment with the strainer hole. Do I really need the strainer if I am running with a spin on filter in the return?

Are you sure the strainer and cover aren't out of alignment with the oil pick up?

You have 7 chances to get the filter wrong 👍

Hi Pat,
The pickup pipe can be manouvered so it lines up with the filter,  gentle prising one way or  the other rather than using the BFH
Alternatively  make up a new filter plate that lines up, I got  a piece of perforated brass sheet as used on the singles  but can't remember where now *conf2*

I got mine off Ebay.
Making and fitting one that aligns nicely must be less risky than trying to persuade the pick-up pipe, I figured.

G'day Pat.
Under NO circumstance leave out the strainer. For the simple reason if a piece of crap (broken off gasket) blocks the pipe of a bit of metal goes through the pump the motors days are numbered.
I agree with John, the pipe can be moved gently a bit.

I had the same problem with  the one I bought.

I ended up prizing up the lip that held the screen in place and turning the mess to the right spot, than i pinched the screen back down.

It took a little picking and prodding but it works.

The SRM instructions for fitting their sump filter kit suggests using a ring spanner to realign the pickup pipe - see their download.

I think the filter plates differ between the twins and later unit singles.

Thats exactly like mine Julian! *smile*

I just didnt think bending on the pick-up tube was a good idea, so I rotated the mesh instead.

I guess i could have bent it.

The strainer is there to protect the oil pump from engine debris.
If it will pass through the screen then it will pass through the pump without damaging the pump
So yes it needs to be be there
And for the same reason you need the strainer in the oil tank
