Possible cylinderhead gasket leak
« on: 22.04. 2023 13:30 »
Hi everyone,my Flash hasn't been run for a few months so I thought I would start it up.I drained the sump and couldn't believe how much oil came out, minimum 2pints.My Super rocket collects about a cupful in comparison.Anyway, she started no bother and I was running her up to temperature and checking her over.
After 5 mins or so I noticed smoke coming from between the exhaust flanges. When I looked between the cylinders the 'hidden' head bolt had some tiny bubbles exiting from under the washer.
Do you guys think I have a gasket issue?
Any help appreciated.

G'day 66.
Could it just be moisture steaming when it gets hot?
If not just re-tension the head bolts and try. Our fav job the rocker box  *pull hair out*
Cheers

G'day Musky, thanks for the positive answer but no,sadly its definitely oily bubbles. Ill whip the head off and have a look,Im kinda keen to try one of those solid copper gaskets for the rocker box anyway.

G'day 66.
I anneal all copper gaskets, the rocker box ones are already done but I do them again. and use "Copper Gasket Cement" https://tinyurl.com/kczmzzec

Honestly, you guys have got everything. The gaskets come ready annealed and vacuum packed. They are re usable but need annealing again. Apparently they are better than normal gaskets as the side strain on tbe rocker box from the head stay doesnt affect the copper as much. The box makes its impression on the copper so to speak. Im gonna try it anyway. And Ill search for some copper gasket spray. Cheers again.
