Super Rocket 1961 crankcase stud nut torque
« on: 13.07. 2023 10:47 »
Is there a recommended crankcase stud nut torque for a’61 A10 super rocket engine.

Is it the tight enough territory like 12ftlbs?

Had the same problem when i rebuilt my 1960 A10 engine and used A65 specification.
On the last post of this link>https://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/bsaoc_forum/index.php?topic=1895.0 there is a downloadable pdf.
Like you said you're in tight enough territory.

Hang on folks. Which stud nut are we talking?

There are sump plate studs, 1/4" which will shear off just for the hell of it. There are cylinder base studs and magneto mounting studs..5/16" Add to that the studs holding the crankcase halves and the oilpump studs for starters. Is it the one inside the crankcase above the camshaft?

Back then none had a workshop torque setting specified, it was a case of experience and feel as to what was right. A torque wrench was only seen in the finest of establishments, not in the backyard.

But for head bolts, BSA did suggested "Make them all really tight" in the case of iron heads.  With an alloy head there must be a ball park figure somewhere.

G'day Nico.
I do the 5/16" stud nuts to 16ft/lb and the 1/4" to 12ft/lb.
The pdf Catz mentioned as a jpeg attached.
