Canon Printer Shot Itself
« on: 14.11. 2023 15:55 »
Sometimes the modern world proves AI is alive and well and already screwing us big time.

My Canon Printer has just consigned itself the electrical waste dumpster.  Its a cheapo MG3050, cheap because it is made of plastic and the print heads are in the expensive cartridges. So, ever the skinflint I drill a hole in the cartridges and refill with bulk ink, There is a YouTube hack to fool the brains and over ride the warning that ink is low.....In fact it does not measure the ink, just the number of documents printed and calculates  theoretical ink left, then puts up the sign to change the cartridge and only use genuine Canon. I can do this 2-3 times before the print head gives up and we're off in search of a new cartridge.

Now it tells me the "Ink Absorber Pad " is full and needs changing. YouTube hack again to over ride this one, and it has been printing happily until today, when "A Major Error Occurred". The Brains have twigged that it has been jury rigged and the Canon Software tells me it needs those pads changing and a trip to the nearest Canon Service Centre for a software fix.

Bugger that, Mr Canon will have a minimum charge of more than the cost of a new printer from my nearest swag shop, so effectively it's junk.

I'll research a little for now, there may be another hack and I hate to be beaten by some Chinese Algorithm.

The non-repairabilty of electronics due to high costs is a modern world disgrace.

Device and it's parts may be 95% fine, but the price for fixing the faulty 5% can be more than buying something new! Do not tell me this is not a well planned strategy form the megacompanies. But, at least in EU, things may slowly improve.

You're overly-optimistic if you really believe that-
a) Chinese etc manufacturing gives a toss what the EU thinks, and
b) the EU endless-talking shop will ever actually agree to do anything about the issue anyway.
