Much needed update
« on: 01.12. 2024 16:42 »
Hi all

1962 BSA A10 Super Rocket belonging to my Father, either was made into a cafe racer or it was already like that.

Guess something happened to the cylinder head as I never found it and my Father stripped the bike down in the late 70’s to rebuild it. My Parents moved houses a few times before my Brother and I was born and losing parts in the process.
When I was growing up the frame, forks and swingarm was in the back garden rotting away. In 2002, I started doing my research, got parts manual and workshop manual. Looked for all the parts, many missing and pretty much started as an incomplete basket case.
I moved to USA in 2006 and started buying the parts in 2007. What’s been stopping me is the frame, engine bottom end and gearbox was still in UK. As well as normal things in life such as getting married, house and family etc.

Well finally, I went back to UK, shipped the gearbox back and brought back the engine bottom end, inner and outer timing covers, cylinders, inner and outer primary covers.
The frame I did not bring back, even though I was heart broken as it was the original, found it was too far gone, both bottom tubes were rotten, no side stand lug, centre stand lugs were rotten and no petrol tank mount.

I found a 1962 BSA A10 frame in Illinois, made the purchase and it arrived yesterday.

Now I’m inspecting it, does not need close to the amount of work needed on the other frame, found a dent in left down tube (does not look to be a problem and can use lab metal before powder coating) and the tyre pump mount on top is broken off (could always shave it off and make it smooth).

Checking for frame straightness and to see if all the mounting holes line up. Most of the engine/gearbox mounting studs needed persuading using a rubber mallet (don’t want to do that when it’s freshly painted) and the riders footrest stud holes don’t even line up.

What’s needed? Apply some heat and twist it till it lines up or to get the drill out?

Going to be a long process and happy now I can get to work on it after all these years!

I'll second that!
That foot pedal bolt can takes some fiddling. Leave it until last, get the other bolts / studs in first.  I decent size pry-bar is very handy for lining up the holes.

As you all know it’s a long process and I have every confidence it will eventually return to the road!
Just don’t know how long it would be and just trying to be patient and not rush anything!

So far everything fits
Spacers between the mudguard/fender and arrow stay needs to be shaved

Have since had the wheel hubs blasted, painted, re-laced and trued. If I’d realize it would have been the price I paid I would have done it myself

Had the brake shoes blasted and relined

Going to be a long process of polishing the aluminium/aluminum parts, started with the gearbox clutch adjuster cover and now I know why they charge so much for labor

Had got the connecting rods removed from the crankshaft, my sockets felt like they were going to break so took it to a classic bike shop, they were kind enough to measure the timing end and big ends and happy to know they’re standard!
But will still have it ground and polished to 010 as they had a little play

Got the front end repainted, but not happy with the result so ultimately thinking I’m going have to repaint the whole thing myself

G'day Ant.
Great to see it IS coming along. It can be frustrating, one step forward two steps back. Do as much as you can yourself, avoids disappointment.
Cheers
