6v charging/regulator
« on: 12.08. 2025 14:56 »
Hello everyone, i am struggling with my 6v dynamo /voltage regulator, the dynamo appears to be throwing out a voltage when running and as far as i can tell the wiring is correct but the voltage regulator seems to be intermittent and im now at the point where when i pick the revs up the headlight actually dims rather than gets brighter. Does anyone have a decent guide for how to setup /test the regulator? Or better still anyone have any obvious ideas for what ive got wrong?

Thanks

You don't say which model, but for info on the RB106, google   'repairing the lucas rb106' by Dr H Holden. It's still good to give an insight into how most model work. I presume both sets of contacts are cleaned up

How are you testing the dynamo?

Apologies i didnt say what its for, its a7 rigid e3 dynamo, yes both sets contacts cleaned if i put 6_7 volts on the regulator the contacts on the cutput close but the regulator doesnt seem to move ill have a look at the info you suggested 👍

Tested the dynamo by linking both terminals sticking the multimeter into the linked terminals and then the other end to earth

You should get about 8v when the dynamo is turning at about 1300 r.p.m.

Service Sheet 804A gives a schematic of the internals of BR107,  Sheet 804  shows the control box MCR1 & MCR2 and a basic circuit diagram, along with a test procedure.

My understanding is that the frame of the unit is electrically isolated from its mounting feet.  If the headlight dims when engine revved, this would make me think that the battery voltage is being drained somewhere else as a consequence of the rising dynamo voltage closing the cut out contacts. So a visual check, look for dirty or broken connections, incorrect wiring to the terminal block, F goes to field on dynamo, D is dynamo output, E is the earth/ground and Terminal A is the main feed to the loom so check that these have not been mis-wired.

Simple continuity tests should show any fault in the basic electrical set up of the unit. I've never messed with the adjustment, they either work reasonably or not at all.

 Swarfy.

Dynamo output reducing as revs rise can be caused by a brush not sliding freely in its holder.

Hi Stuie,
It is bettrer to test the dynamo with a load,
Connect a headlamp bulb where you had the multimeter.
The regulators need around 8 v to operate the regulating coil,
It is well worthwhile to upgrade to a DVR2 regulator,  hide it inside the old regulator body if looks are important
