« on: 18.08. 2025 12:20 »
has anybody used an ultrasonic cleaner to fix the clagging up of the tiny jets/ports in the Amal monobloc??
If so, what did you use (machine) and what fluid please??
I have a similar issue with my B&S small engine on my mulcher and its been suggested I use an ultrasonic cleaner... cheers

Hi Jules, I have cleaned carbs with Ultrasonic but have always cleared the jets using microdrills, so unsure about Ultrasonic. I have read on other forums that many don't have confidence in Ultrasonic to clean small orifi.
I posted this to the Forum in 2019.

thanks Col, very useful actually,  *thanks*
Regarding the use of the ultrasonic machine, I get the impression that a suitable cleaning fluid with hot water is the key, but you need to be careful to use the right cleaning fluid for aluminum, hence my question wrt has anybody done it! cheers

Blocked pilot jets are resistant to ultra sonic cleaning due to the nature of the gum build up. I have always found it neccersary to use a piece of wire to clear them. The gum will not readily dissolve by ultra sonic treatment alone. A piece of guitar string works well and does not cause any damage. Ultra sonic will make a good job of cleaning the body but normally will be useless with with residual petrol gum deposits. The best you can do is to always leave the engine running after you have turned of the fuel tap and let it run until it runs out of fuel. Normally I alternate pilot jets. One in service and one clean jet so they can be quickly changed. It might also prove neccersary to push a wire through the two inlet openings located inside the bellmouth because they too can be obstructed and just cleaning the pilot jet is not always enough.

I have a 2 litre ultrasonic bath which I find very effective using distilled water and either pine-Sol or a simple green product(be careful one of the simple green solutions eats aluminium in hours). I also use guitar wire or my jet drills extensively.

You can get carb jet cleaning kits on fleabay. I was sceptical but they have proved very useful. They are like tiny rat tail files in a range of sizes and of course dirt cheap.

I have the same experience with ultrasonic, yes the outsides look nice but no matter what fluid I have tried I still have to clean the jets manually. Guitar wire, strands from an old bowden cable or the cheap little tools tyou can get that blacksheep mentions have always worked best for me.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a set of welding tip cleaners, perfect for carbies and cheap.
