Customer service?
« on: 28.09. 2025 18:34 »
What's happened to customer service?

A while back, I sent an alloy tube to a local firm for welding. I'd traded with them for over 50 yrs. When I got the bill, it was over £600 - for 2 ½ hrs work. No 'let's look at it' or 'we'll do cost price' no - pay it or see you in court. Which I did, followed by them accepting a much reduced arbitration figure. And me never using them again.

A well-known UK motorcycle firm assured me the £130 they wanted for a tyre was less VAT (we don't pay that where I live, we have our own tax). After I paid it I discovered that price was pretty universal, and several dealers I contacted all said it included VAT which they would deduct for me. Another firm I won't be using again.

Recently the battery on my partner's car failed. I've been working on automotive and marine electrics since the mid sixties, so I know what I'm doing. In this case the battery went flat overnight and, presuming it was just flat (lights left on perhaps?) I put it on charge. Immediately the charger indicated fully charged, so I took the three-month old battery to our local Lucas distributor (again, been using them since mid sixties). The new know-it-all young foreman told me 'the battery's finished, caused by the car'. I told him I knew it wasn't, but he kept arguing. So I closed my account and now go elsewhere.
When I told a local retail competitor, they said I'd been a customer so long they'd have replaced it regardless; and I'm not alone in leaving that dealership with its new staff.

A local fuel supplier bod repeated (by phone) the same payment mantra so often it sounded like a circular tape recording. In despair I asked him if he'd heard of customer services, to which he replied 'I'm in it'. To which I suggested he was in the wrong job and he hung up. So I ordered from a competitor - at a lower price. Who needs morons like this?

Or, more poignantly, why has customer services ceased to exist?

Closer to home, there's at least three bike bits suppliers who I'll never use again because of their sh*tty customer care attitudes.
A couple of whom I've seen recommended on here over the years.. *eek*

RD fella they don't want to know i took a radio back to a shop because it wouldn't work on the battery circuit , i paid cash and took the receipt with me, then they wanted to know my name and postcode because they said the till wouldn't open without this information , so i said the till opened for you to put the money in so open it . eventually when another jobsworth heard me ranting they got the till open. this is just another example of those big glass buildings being built collecting personal information and customer service is not as important as data collection.

I think it's 'short termism'. Basically, nobody's in it for the long haul anymore. They take your money while they can, then when people stop buying from them they close up and walk away. The broader example is set by politicians, many of whom seem to have no moral code. They say what will get them elected, then don't deliver on their promises. Generally, there seem to be no consequences for people who are dishonest. Nowadays it seems to be very difficult to challenge somebody who is trying to rip us off because they know that the legal system is expensive and exhausting and most of us won't bother. Well done RDfella for pursuing the matter.

Recently I bought a car battery, which after a few weeks went flat for no apparent reason. I charged it using a good 'smart charger'. Tried several times but it just wouldn't hold the charge.
Took it back to the (Big) auto retailer, they told me that because the battery appeared to be no good, the 2 year warranty didn't apply, but if the battery had been okay, they would change it for a new one. Work that one out! Hahaha!
No, I haven't got this A about F !!!

Well Cheeser... I did toy with the idea of returning a good battery after say, 23 months use, (with a month still covered by warranty), and getting a new replacement.
Think! I could have a lifetimes supply of batteries then, if I kept doing that. Hah!
Yes I did contest it, and submitted a few reports to consumer complaints bureaux.

Well, in the end, they did 'fix' the battery, - maybe some sort of deep charge... Or maybe they snuck me a new battery, (Stupidly I hadn't marked the original battery) who knows?
So, the SAAB lives on!

I will go to any lengths to try to get some satisfaction from s****y companies.  I'll chase up anything from a quid upwards (mouldy cheese), to car parts (crappy drive shafts).  Most of the time, I quote the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (which demands that goods are of satisfactory quality), if the company starts to p**s me about.  I'll also harass them, find the senior managers online and write to them (Companies House can be good for info), and will explore every avenue I can to get satisfaction.

Like you guys, I'm sick to death of these idiots who think they can push people around and take their money.  There have been occasions when I've not got a decent result, but they're few and far between.

Watch out for Ebay!!  I've bought a couple of things that are faulty after their return window.  When you try to return to the seller, the seller has 'disappeared'.

Of course, with some things, it's good to get some paperwork in place before engaging services or buying goods at an agreed price.  When we had a new kitchen about 10 years ago, the company wanted paying in advance for the units, etc.  I said that I'd pay for them once they'd been delivered to the house.

Golden rule, NEVER pay for anything up front!

Thinking what the hell I sent of an email requesting a MPH version .2 weeks later a new one arrived no mention of returnig the other or indeed anything .Suffice to say it worked and as been on the bike for 8yrs now.
