Hi everyone, just bought my first classic British bike, a 1960 Golden Flash. Bit of work to do before the bike is on the road but starts and runs ok. Also own a Suzuki V-Strom.
I'm from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

Bit more info on the bike.
Don't know much history, but has been stored for awhile. Rear tyre is cracked.
Has a custom paint job, while I like the colour it wasn't done well. Peeling and cracking.
Amal concentric carb stamped 930 L 9.3. So I think it's a left hand carb of a later model.
Started and sounded great, but after giving it a rev it didn't settle down to normal idle.
Also leaked oil from both side cover after the engine ran. I drained the primary to the proper level and about 1 litre came out. Not sure if it had been overfilled.
There is a video of it on YouTube,  channel is Oz ADV Rider.  Had been all V-Strom content until now

 *welcome*

Please take the time to research the term 'Sludge Trap' before you start riding the bike.

OAR,

Hello, and welcome *welcome*. I watched the video and it seems you have a great project ahead of you, for which you seem mechanically well suited to take on. Unless it's against your rules, would you mind sharing your first name? (Bank account number and mother's maiden name not required.) So much more comforatble. Some of us have been here approaching 20 years, and think of eachother on a first-name basis.

A few things about the bike:
  • Sounds pretty good.
  • Since you don't have a choke, you might want to add an extended throttle stop screw. Helpful for keeping idle up when cold and reducing after warmup. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRDMdOlbK38VZ0TBiiw0YQ286HnN7sNzu6oZQ&s
  • No need to pump the tickler. All it's doing is sinking the float so fuel will flood into the venturi. I use a count of about three.
  • You mentioned charging the battery before starting. No need, as you have a magneto (you probably know this).
  • You mentioned brake issues. The positions of both levers at the drums seem to indicate worn shoes.
  • I believe you mentioned idle not returning after working the throtte (sorry, if I've recalled incorrectly). This can be due to a distorted carb body caused by overtightening of the carb to the head. You may want to remove the carb and surface the flange flat using wet/dry sandpaper on glass or other very flat surface. You probably know the drill, figure eight motion with light oil on the paper. Tighten the nuts just enough, no more.
  • To GB's point. knowledge of the sludge trap that runs through rod journals of the crankshaft is mandatory. This trap intentionally collects particulate that, under a life of daily riding, probably stays "glued" in the trap. However, sitting for a long time might dry it out enough to let go and clog the oil feed to the rod journals (DAMHIK). Definitely a bigger possibility of problem if you start using detergent oil.
  • Uuuh, I need to get back to work.

Richard L.
