Introduction from Yorkshire, England

Hi,

Thankyou for accepting me onto the forum. Some of you who are also on BritBike will know me on there too.

I have a good few BSA’s, been riding A65’s for a good 20+ years but cut my teeth as a teen helping restore and riding pillion on A10’s with my father.

Due to my father’s diminishing health he offered me one of his A10’s. Needless to say I took the first one we restored together. A 59’ black golden flash.


Quite a different bike to the A65’s or the super rocket of his I used to ride of his.

Sadly, enroute to one of the BSA branch camps this last summer, the oil tank let go and dumped all its oil. Seizing the engine before I even realised. The tank was found to not only have a hole in the bottom of the tank, but the seam must have failed some years before and been silver soldered up as it scraped out with a spatula. Surprisingly it had lasted about 20 years.

Anyway that’s now repaired, just waiting now till I can get round to doing the engine.

Welcome to forum.  That's an excellent and sad introduction. We will look forward to pictures of all the interesting internal damage and the progress you make erasing it.

The bike is waiting in the wings to get onto the bike bench, I have a bit of tidying up to do before I can get some room to get the motor out. I’ll give the motor and the gearbox a thorough going through whilst it’s apart.

Even closer, I'm in Normy, my wife works at Ponte Hospital.

I've never been to the meet, where is it and when do they meet?  I might pop along and say hello!

The rebuild, by Bergs (down Derbyshire way), revealed the horror stories of my original rebuild by a so-called 'expert' - we refer to him as Rivet Man (RM) on the forum as he even failed to rivet up the rebuilt ATD properly.

We used to meet at the Cross Keys at Old Snydale (a stones throw from you) but it turned into a “food’s” pub. So we found ourselves down at the Anglers Retreat at Winterset. A little bit further for you so worth getting the engine warm on the bike. I don’t get there often as I work away a lot, but when I do I always try and turn up on a bike.

Do you have a link to the thread? I’ve tried using the search option and trawling through the pages of threads but I seem to be missing it  I have a bit of learning of how this forum navigates.

I’ve built a few A65/A50 engines in the past and even have a large journal A10 crank married with B44 pistons in my OIF, makes for a beautiful touring bike, loaded with luggage it competes happily with traffic. So confidence in the build isn’t an issue (time is always the limiting factor). It would also benefit from some new pogo sticks for the front and rear (been happy with the progressive springs from SRM on my 68’ A65, so will fit those with their damper units) and the rear suspension is original factory, so will get a set for that too. Some Konis would be nice - if I can still get shrouded ones.

As for the Angler's, a bit further but just about worth putting the lid on for.  Do you know when they meet?  Would I be right in thinking this info is online somewhere?

I should have said the when, you did ask. Thursdays around 8pm. It is a fairly pleasant run on the bike. Away from the town traffic.
