Tappet Guide removal
« on: 01.02. 2026 18:56 »
Anyone know how the outer (inlet?) Tappet guides are removed? - I'm thinking a long nut on the threaded end and a slide hammer when the cases have been warmed?

I see there was a dedicated tool for the job - 61 30069 - what does it look like?

Ahhhh! It's a longstroke, didn't realise. If my memory serves me correctly, they just pull out, but don't take my word for it, I'm not a longstroke expert!

Yes, they are a simple push in fit. Getting the devils  out is a matter of applying a pull, but a slide hammer may break the crankcase casting before the bond between steel and alloy plus 80 years of intimate contact gives way. Top of the guide is threaded, so an obvious point of purchase for the official tool.  A similar well supported homespun extractor, applied force and heat is a better bet than violence. Outer Cam Followers cannot be replaced after refitting the guide, nor will the followers push out first, they will foul on the crankcase. Ensure correct orientation of the followers.....( One side is curved ) and correct alignment of the outer guides before seating them in place with a smack for good luck.

Good Picture there from Brandis, no doubt taken as a prelude to a lot of hassle.

I made up a tube and nut for mine then a little judicious warming and patience. Went well and job was done ! Placement and clearance are everything, don’t rush the job.

As they say "Tis a Proper Job"  even down to the hold down facility using the crankcase flange studs to keep the base plate aligned and the angled socket for the support tube. They stood no chance,   but stealth and guile won.
Well done, as I said they are very tenacious.
