Hi Chris, nice to see progress happening. Just a thought looking at your photos. It looks as though the covers (timing and primary, presumably crankcases too) have been sand blasted. Can I suggest vapour blasting will leave you with a much better surface with closed pores that is easier to keep clean and looking good. Preference would normally be polishing on the covers really but maybe you still plan to do that?
Cheers and keep us posted

Chris, the timing cover for your bike has two horizontal "carrots" under the piled arms.
Also is different inside, no shrouding around the breather.

Its Me again *eek*,

Sorry to have to dig this concern up again *sad2*
Blasting of any kind of media is an invitation to disaster  *problem*
Unless,
every fitting, bush and blanking plug,  have been removed from the cases so that the nooks crannies and drillings blanked of by the factory can be visually inspected for remaining media and old crap and of course remove it
Same goes with oil tanks *warn*

Thanks for the input guys, thoughtful food. That’s all the blasting done with, polishing next on the list.

Sounds like the timing side case was replaced at some point but that’s the case I have and I don’t personally see any point in searching out one that is technically correct for year/model for the sake of a couple of carrots … honey glazed roast parsnips would be a different story … *eek* ;)

You are correct John, there certainly is a risk but most professional engine reconditioners tend to favour vapor blasting and it is used extensively in the trade. i.e. Seager Engineering in Suffolk.  It is fine as long as everything is thoroughly flushed, blown out and cleaned afterwards as glass beads are used in the media.  I certainly wouldn't advocate any form of media blasting be used on an oil tank as you say though as these are impossible to seal and impossible to clean out!

As for carrots, I can't see any but then that may be because I haven't been eating enough of em? *grins*

I've tried soda blasting on the ally, it's  slow but washing with water afterwards is supposed to dissolve the soda. It seemed to work OK . Anyone heard of a downside to it, chemical reaction etc ?

As they say you learn something every day, thought the carrots 🥕 were a wind up

From carrots to carbs … been sizing up the old 276 and decided I’ll probably go with a new Amal Premier 900 concentric on advice from Hitchcocks Motorcycles and other sources.

How do folks find the clearance with these carbs and the plunger frames? Is there room to mount a bellmouth? Or a short ram pipe as pictured below? And would straight through pipes affect choice of jets? Cheers

My Star Twin has a Premier fitted (very pleased with it too) and there's room for a short bellmouth without looking too crammed-in.

Chris,
Just for interest this is the inside of the early timing cover. No shroud for breather.
You are better off with the one you have.

And what was the problem that they decided to shroud the breather?

Probably to reduce the amount of oil loss through the breather, I would say.
So when did BSA stop with the carrots?

So how does the breather function?
And yes when did they stop the carrots?

That “short ram pipe” tea strainer looks restrictive to me.
