indian speedos
« on: 14.06. 2010 11:28 »
Hi You guys, I need to get my Smiths Chronometric Overhauled and I was wondering about one of the cheap indian ones as a temporary placement. Have you guys a view on them. One point is that mine is nachelle mounted so I would need the replacement to have a detachable chrome bezel and any brackets would need to be detachable. Regards Huddie

G'day Huddie,
got one on the cafe. Not bad for the price, it wanders a bit. Not sure about the bezel coming off. The main problem is the cable. Your BSA one wont fit. I bought one of theirs (too long) and cut it down to length. Bit of a job but beats watching tv.

The ratio is not quite right.
The ones I have seen are 2:1 which equates to about 1600 revs per mile.
The standard A10 type is 1440 or 1420.

G'day Trev,
So that means mine is reading faster than actual speed by about 1/8 th. I sat behind a mate doing 100 KPH and my speedo read 60 MPH so someone is fibbing. *smile*
Cheers

I just had my Smiths one overhauled by Gaggs of Nottingham - it was a lot of money but looks, and works, like new for the 1st time in 30 years.
I had wondered about the Indian Enfield ones but decided against in favour of originality.

Hi Pete Gray, How long was your speedo at Gagg's for the o'haul?, and if you don't mind me asking, how much was it?
Regards Huddie

From posting to receiving was just over a week and cost ................ £175 !
My bike is non standard, no nacelle fitted, so the speedo is RGS type bracket fitted. Gaggs did a paint job on the case and new bezel + a nice brass knurled fitment for the trip odometer as well as a complete overhaul of the mechanism.

I was put off by the price at first but the same week my Wife bought 2 tickets for Oliver in London @ £45 each which I thought put things into perspective. (And the speedo was the only bit of the bike not to have received any attention)

Thanks for that Pete, I like the justification, I measure mine in "hairdo's". How much did that cost she goes, less than 2 hairdo's I reply. it usually works.

Muskrat,
The speedo ratio selected depends on the sprockets selected. And the layshaft gear/sleeve gear. And the layshaft/speedo drive gearset.
I think you will find that you are reading slower than your actual speed if you have the standard set up.
With a 2:1 speedo drive the cable revs will be approx 1600 per mile and at that speed you will be doing 60 mph indicated.
However, with standard gearing 60 mph is reached at 1450 cable revs per mile.
Having said all that, my mate has an Indian made replica on a Flash. Before he fitted it he checked the calibration by driving the head at a known speed.
It was close enough to correct for the Flash gearing.
Makes you wonder how well these speedos are calibrated at the factory.
Off to my young days which is a long time ago, I fitted a Triumph "revulator" type speedo head to my Flash, blissfully ignorant to the different ratios.
The gentleman in a blue uniform driving a Cooper "S" soon set me right.

   Trev.

G'day Trev,
std gearing south of the primary but a 18" rear wheel. So should bring it back close enough. I've been pulled up twice for speeding and got off. Once they have a look at the cafe they seem to forget about the speed and start talking about the bike their dad had.
Cheers.
