rocker box retrofitting
« on: 19.08. 2010 14:13 »
Good morning, fellas.  I'm a little confused.  I've been using Draganfly.co.uk for all my needs with my BSA A7 project this year and they've always been a wealth of knowledge.  I ordered 8 studs and nuts for the rocker box inspection covers, and when they showed up the nuts were sleeve nuts, not standard nuts.  I called Draganfly and they said that 50-59 A7's used sleeve nuts and that 60-62 used standard nuts.  I'm confused because my bike is a '57 and requires standard nuts.  Is it possible for a previous owner to have retrofitted a '60 or later rocker box to my '57 engine?  I might add that the bike was a mechanical (and visual) disaster when I got it, so God only knows what all has been hacked.

Does anyone have a picture of their rocker box that I could compare to mine?

Hi Eric,

The part number for the 1957 rocker box inspection cover nuts is 65-2153 and, although the view is not too clear, they appear to be shown as sleeve nuts in the parts book.  The parts book for 1960 models shows the equivalent item to be standard nuts and the part number 01-6032.

Hi Eric,
My bike (manufactured late '61) had a mixture of both, courtesy of DPO I guess - the studs weren't consistent either..

I'm not saying mine is necessarily right but I've fitted sleeve nuts to mine as I thought that was correct, they also are much easier as there's very little room for dealing with standard ones... I also fitted new studs just to be certain I could tighten everything down evenly.

Hope this helps...

Pretty certain my 61 Flash had sleeve nuts ( in 1962 ) memory comes into this of course, however lets remember there are mistakes in parts books
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco

Hi Frenchy,
I don't know the answer to your question but I've purchased the majority of my nuts/bolts (stainless) from Lightning Spares for my A7 (54?) Plunger - Brian has a wealth of knowledge and he has always been to help out even if not buying; Brian is real A10 guy with loads of goodies on offer.

I had a look at a relatively untouched '62 Rocket yesterday, an import from the U.S.
The rocker cover nuts are the sleeve nuts as used from the beginning.
Maybe the factory was going to change to standard nuts but realised that the sleeve nut is a better option.
I have never seen a bike fitted with a complete set of standard nuts. Only the odd one here and there.
