Good morning everyone , sorry for the rather tense title but honestly at 63 I felt I'd seen and heard of every just about every stupid mindless act that people can inflict on each other but no I've been surprised yet again.
It took 67 yrs to get a memorial to the 55000 aircrews of Bomber command who lost there lives , after being let down by politicians , forgotten by there countrymen  ( some off) and generally ***** off at the way this country is going they got there memorial, paid for by the public .
It's been there all of 6 mths and now some mindless moron has defaced it . I sincerely hope they catch who ever did this and that they throw the book at them and do it before the last of these brave men finally shuffle of there mortal coil.
Sorry for rant , but i'm bloody livid, oh and I really do feel that way about this forum, BobH

I just had a look at the pictures. It is f*cking horrible but I feel it may have been done by prats, following the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby to stir up hatred against Islam.

There is that consolation Richard except that it was portland sandstone ,very porous and they may have to reface or replace ,which can't be done until another fund is set up by the charity etc and more time. The good news is that an expert in graffiti removal is helping them ,this guy removed the graffiti from stonehendge. so may be okay . still shouldn't be needed. fingers crossed BobH.

While I don't generally agree with these forums containing political comments, I fully agree with your sentiments Bob. This is a disgrace to our country and our wartime allies. The criminals should be strung up.

Personally I think that sadly you are expecting far too much.

There is and probably always has been a significant proportion of the population who really can’t see much past the end of their own nose, and care even less about it. And of those there are of course a bunch who for no good reason (it would seem) beyond their own amusement take it upon themselves to desecrate and damage as they see fit.

At the same time, for many, the exploits of the Second World War and before have long since passed in to some kind of irrelevant pre-history.

It may be that I’m one of the younger members of this forum – born in ’60, probably conceived in the 50s; just. But I have an interest in history generally and an intense admiration of what folks stepped up to do when the chips were down. I was pounding it out on a treadmill in the gym on the lunch time of the Dambusters anniversary and they were showing clips of the testing runs. It genuinely brought a lump to the throat.

You’d like to think that if we had to step up and be counted we would, but should be eternally grateful that we are unlikely to be presented with that opportunity.

Sadly I have to agree with your opinion of the mindless few, and add that if our media had some sense  of responsibility they would desist from giving them the attention they revel in.
On a more positive note we should recognize that it's young men and women in our armed forces that are today still upholding that tradition we so admire.

My old man is to be awarded the Artic Star for serving on convoy escorts to Russia in WW2. Flower class corvette with an open bridge, that must have been fun even before the U-boats turned up. Pity it took them so long, like with the bomber crews, as he like so many others will receive it posthumously.

I do feel for the brave German and Japanese servicemen whose bravery and sacrifice for their countries is forgotten. Like my Vietnam vet brother-in-law has found, it pays to be on the winning side if you want your country to be grateful.

Hi Ethelred, when I was aboy living in Seaforth from my bedroom window I could see the gladstone dock and when empty the west wall where all the escorts inc Walkers close escort group berthed .When I eventually got down there with my dad and told what they'd been used for etc I was amazed that there was no plaque or anything honnouring those guys ,still don't think theres anything , which is yet another disgrace, regards Bob.
