I'm sure an expert at some time in the past advised me that for an iron head you just pull the head bolts down as tight as you can. Anyone else heard that one?

I don't see any advantage to putting the pushrods in before the head. Either ways you're still stuck with the same agro trying to poke them in to the rocker cups once the rocker box is on.

35 lb/ft runs through my head but could be wrong (I'm crocked today as you guys put it) got a touch of infection down the conrod end, damn had to get the missus to run me in to the Docs as I can't walk straight

Important thing is to make sure the threads and stud holes in the barrel are clean, pushrods - it's easier to see the cam follower cups with the head off but ten to one you'll knock them out with the head anyway

I use 40lb ft .  NO idea where I got the figure from  the bolts are big with a fine thread so you won't break them.  Probably for Brit bikes tho you could go with the Sheldon Brown scale somewhere about real damn tight

My latest toy from eBay. Proto 40-200 in-lb torque wrench. The certified calibration expired two days ago. Do I dare trust it? ;)

Now I can stop trying to figure out the beam torque wrench readings, which can't be within +/- 3 lb., even after homestyle calibration.

I allways torqued head bolts on my 1960 A10 to 25ft lbs and never had a problem.

I thought the topic was just "Torque Wrench." I missed the word "settings." Not making any statement about settings, just thought that the calibration status on this eBay buy would be amusing.
