A7 , A10 confused
« on: 24.06. 2014 05:31 »
Hi All,
Im new here. Great to see so much on this bike. Bit confused now after reading some info here.
I bought this bike from a malaysian guy in Penang years ago and brought it back to Australia. knowing it was an A10. After checking the pictures on the net this bike looks more like an A7. i counted 7 fins on the barrel. The frame stamped ZA7 and the engine stamped ZA10. working great when I got it here.
Went thru a vicious divorce and had to pull it apart and store it on the farm.
After 10 years I got it back together with problem which I talk about latter. If someone help me to identify this bike, will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards
Vitto

G'day Vitto, welcome along- they all have frames that start with *A7 except for the much later ones, and I think I see yours is a plunger, so that'll be ZA7 S *****  ('S' for spring frame).
I have later type big fin barrels and they have 8 fins, so dunno about small fins, but maybe someone has either whacked A7 barrels on A10 cases, and I daresay a crank to suit- or they've done a long-stroke short -rod conversion (which I doubt), like one of the guys has done....TT/RR/??? (lost track)

Just Re-read yours, and ZA10 cases, that maybe another story that someone else knows more about

G'day Vitto,  *welcome*
Yep, I'd say she's had a cases swap. 7 fins = A7.
Eng # ZA10-101 to 4000 = 1950   Frame # ZA7S-6001
          ZA10-4001 to 12000 = '51                ZA7S-14001
          ZA10-12001 to ***** = '52              ZA7S-26001
Cheers

Thanks guys. I guess its now its an A7. Is it any advantage with the A10 caseing. How do i work out now the gearbox. Is it to an A10 specs, i stuck a rod down the spark plug hole and piston was at its lowest point and measured approx 4.5 inches if dat means anything. *sad2*
Bit disapointed turned our to be a mungrel.

There's no such thing as a mongrel A7/10. Just modified to personal taste. *smile*
The cases are the same just a different # stamp. The gearbox, primary and most cycle parts are the same as well.
Just ride and enjoy.

Gday Vitto,
If you're not happy, I'll swap you a bottle of stone's green ginger wine (10 years old) and a Queensland state of origin maroon wig for it.
Better be quick, you don't get offers like this every day.
cheers

I don't think much Fosters is drunk in Australia these days, Bob.
They couldn't give it away in NSW when they took over the local brewery.

Yes it's sent OS to keep them away from our good stuff. I only know one fellow who drinks it, he's a race horse trainer. Guess who sponsors horse racing?

I think I said it before, but the local Doctor used to drink it, said it doesn't give a hangover so I gave it a whirl........first and last time I took his advice ....*sick*

But to be fair when I was in Rome (Melbun) a few years ago,I did what one does in Rome- the pub round the corner from the F-factory (Clifton Hill) had $1.90 schooners(15oz.)- can't go too far wrong, and surprisingly not as bad, but only had one more for confirmation and let the sleeping dog lie, so it could keep all its' hair.....  *conf*

Oh yeah Vic-  if it has two wheels, makes a noise and has BSA(A10) on it, is worth using *smile*

Honestly guys I was only joking .... about the Fosters !! I wouldn't inflict on my worse enemys let alone mates plus I remember the outcry many months ago when I asked if anyone over there drank the stuff, wow I think I only just escaped being " moderated" for using offensive language.
Still one hell of a nice looking "A " Vitto, cheers BobH

Just be aware that over 60 years of meddling, anything is possible.
My A10 has 7 fins and is still a 650 A10!
but I use short rods...
