Somebody stop me!
« on: 13.02. 2009 08:20 »
It started with just lowering the seat mounting and recovering the saddle. Then I thought I'd reposition the electronics box to allow me to make use of the toolbox. Then I thought I'd better address the slight "patination" caused by years of Scottish road salt on the back end of the frame.....

Bikes take up a lot of room when they're not in one piece!
You get in that frenzy of ripping stuff off "Oh I might as well do that whilst I'm at it...."

Apart from a wobbly back brake plate, the bike was working perfectly when it came off the road at the start of winter....and I still haven't dealt with that.
Cheers,
Iain

Now come on Iain get that bike put back together you know that soon the wintery weather will be over and you'll be wanting to ride those fine roads up your way. The Sunshine is well on its way! Why would you need more room in your tool box compartment? The A10 is a reliable machine is it not?  ???

Seventy days then Iain!   One hour of fettling per day, that's what I've started doing, and I can see the progress being made.

I've got five bikes, all supposed to be on the road, and all now in pieces with something that needs doing before I can ride them!

And what about some of this English lot with their "why aren't you riding?", eh?  They've got that Island climate where it never gets really cold, never snows really deep, never stays icy for too long, a well'ard rocker can ride all year long with the proper wet gear.

Not like you and me with these Continental weather patterns, snow up past your eyeballs or else freezing cold, it's 10 degF here this morning, what's that in Centigrade, about -12?   and ice on the road, I'd like to see someone riding in THAT.

But tell that to kids today and do they believe you?   ;)

Lannis - I hear violins playing

Please don't Lump everyone in the UK rogether, it only takes a couple of inches of snow down in London to bring them all to a halt.
Up North we're made of sterner stuff.
Don't know if we'd cope too well with your conditions though

Bill -

Well, I can see why Northeners might be able to cope, they can stuff copies of Pigeon Fancier's Weekly in their jacket for insulation, have a big plate of Hot Pot for breakfast, with a good wool flat cap on their head and surrounded by Whippets all day, I'm sure they stay warm!!!   *ex* *smile*

Oh. Now I know what LJ was cooking back on his post about camping. It must have been "Hot Pot," which, I take it, is some sort of concoction made with pigeon. ;)

Richard L.

Bacon, eggs, mushrooms, curried beans.  Maybe it was pigeon bacon?

I was doing OK till he mentioned "curried beans".  I mean, I learned to love the Full English Breakfast while in England, on our last trip, we pulled up to a motorway truck stop cafe, Fay and I got off the A10, and I ordered the Full English ....

....BLIMEY I never saw so much stuff on a plate.  Bacon, sausages, beans, toast, black pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs, and fried bread, with tea.  If I didn't have 2000 calories on that plate, and 600 mg of cholesterol, I didn't have anything.

And I've had breakfast cooked for me in a campground over a proper Primus, it's to die for.  BUT I'm sorry, I can't go curried beans of a morning, that's just too much, I'm not the curry type!

first thing to do in a truck stop is look at the truckers belly's -  then decided if you want the full English or full house as it's also known.
But I know when your nostrils get a wiff it's hard to resist, I love a breakfast but it has to be an occasional treat these days.

Bill -

Same for me, I indulged while on that trip but no more, I've been laying off of the meat and grease these past 10 weeks and it's done me a world of good, another 50 weeks of this should fettle me, and THEN a full house might be an occasional indulgence ....

How far are you up North Bill? There is a small gathering on Sunday just north of Lincoln some guys off the Real Classic site are upto having a meeting there.

Now then that camping meal...

Richard your so wrong it was not a 'Hot pot' at all as I was not properly in Yorkshire, only just the very tinyest south eastern corner so. What we actually had was chicken and some chinese type vegtables along with rice noodles and plenty of oil a kinda stir fry if you like. The brekfast... and Lannis was spot on (Well he's becoming more English than any of us here!) apart from the Black Pudding, and don't talk to me about black pudding!  *angry* The curried beans! you really should try some they are delicious!

Hi LJ - I'm in North Northumberland not too far from the border, so Lincoln is a bit off my beat.
Also I'm recovering from a hernia repair so swinging legs over bikes and proding kick starts is out for a while yet.
My project is coming along nicely though and hope to have it on the road in Spring, sadly when this happens I may have to sell my other bike ( 61 Gold Flash), funds needed for other reasons at the moment. Also I have found that my old steed of the sixties ( 61 Gold Flash GSH 360 ) is still around somewhere but described as silver ( it was black ) so when the dust settles I may try to track it down; I still live in the same location as when I owned the bike so it may not be to far away.
If anybody knows of the bike I'd love to know any info.
Why is it we love to have bikes we have previously owned, my mate lives about four miles away tracked down and bought his old shooting star last year, it's on the road now and looks great.

Now curried beans - lovely and they do barbecue ones too.
up here some places do breakfast with fried Tattie scones - fantastic, you used to get what was termed  "the Rievers breakfast" two eggs, two sausages, two rashers of bacon, mushrooms, black pudding ( I love it ), a burger, beans tattie scone and the proverbial half warmed half tomato ( why don't they slice and fry it much better flavour, and the beans should be fried in the pan after the bacon ) - all for £4.50.

Before I had my heart op ( I now have a titanium mitral valve, works fine but is as noisy as an A10 rocker) I had an angiogram which showed my arteries to be good and clear, don't ask me how as I loved and ate all the wrong things, but recently diagnosed Type two Diabetic, so although I don't take any medication I have to watch my diet for sugar and fat, but a very occasional treat is OK.
Iv'e bored you enough about my health better stop before I start posting picture of my scars.

Well somebody did stop me!
A client with an awful lot of work.
Lannis you're right, an hour a day...even 15 minutes a day can get you there.

I'll be taking some time off tonight to paint the bits at the back, the bike was absolutely filthy, I should be thankful though, the bits that werent filthy were rusty. It really deserves a full strip down and repaint, but that will have to wait for when the kids are older.
Cheers,
Iain

Well, better late than never.
The bike is back on the road. £200 later and a lot of grief, it has a back brake that works and doesn't scream when you use it. Thanks for the guidance Trev
Took it for it's first spin on Saturday night,it  ran terribly. I had been experimenting with carburetion when I took it off the road. After redoing the points, I put a 290 main jet in rather than the 330 and it was instantly transformed. It still has this annoying "chugg-chugging" when I either roll of the throttle or try and sit at 40kmh. I'll try lowering the needle a notch, see if that helps.
Cheers,
Iain
