Car dynamo fitted.

Hi there,
I have just bought an A10 basketcase and found a car type dynamo in the basket and a dynamo case with a straight through shaft (With belt pulley) mounted on the motor. At first I thought it was some lash up by a former keeper, but then I saw a photo in a Roy Bacon book that shows a Police Flash with a similar set up. Has anyone seen or know anything about this set up ??

 I believe that the later A7 and the A10 from 1960 onwards had both an alternator and dynamo fitted they were controlled by the headlight switch. This arrangement was suitable for the police because the dynamo on it's own was not powerful enough for the extra lights and the radio. The dynamo however was still chain driven,and the alternator was on the end of the crankshaft they had a special crankshaft and primary cases to accommodate it.

It may well be a mod from a previous lover. What are the markings on the dynamo case? Should be E3L.

Thank you both for you replies, The markings are E3L on the case and I have read about the alternator on the end of the crankshaft, but the photo in the Roy Bacon book is the only reference that I can find !

Welcome to the forum. The chants is, "photos, photos, photos" but I've forgotten if your newbie status lets you post them so soon. Regarding Bikerbob's comment, that would be a big surprise to me (and maybe everyone else, I'm not swearing by it) if all A7's and A10's after 1960 were fitted with dual charging systems. I am pretty sure you only got the alternator if you ordered it special, as in for the police, for example. I AM on iffy ground here and waiting to be confirmed or corrected and slapped.

An E3L is a bike dynamo, not a car one.

I was not implying that all A7 and A10 had alternators fitted only that it was available,  those engines that were fitted with them their engine numbers would start A7 would begin CA7A_xxxx the A10 would begin DA10A-xxxx the A after the first number denoting it had an alternator fitted.

Got it, but in my defense (and lord knows I often need defense, because I can be an idiot), you said this: "I believe that the later A7 and the A10 from 1960 onwards had both an alternator and dynamo fitted they were controlled by the headlight switch", which does, indeed, imply that both were fitted, so I inferred that's what you meant. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I now understand that that is not what you meant. In any case, ride happy.

 The way I read that, is that it has a kind of dummy  shaft through the original dynamo casing, driven by the original setup, and a belt pulley on the other end to maybe drive a car type gen/alternator- kinda like El Toro Dan in Brazil?/Argentina?....

 Nb, just edited in "...kind of dummy....", and "...(dynamo)casing, ..." ..
 (Had to try out the new mobile version anyway. ..) seems OK time will tell.

Yes duTch has got it spot on ! You can see the police bike with one fitted in the Roy Bacon book, but that's the only set-up I've seen or heard of.
BTW the primary case is the one without the removable plate at the front.
