1962 Golden Flash - RIDE IT!
« on: 04.07. 2015 16:51 »
Hello everyone

Here's my year long A10 resto.  Cost me a bit, but worth it.  Does need a couple of niggles ironing out, but otherwise rides like a proper bike - just can't beat that sound at full bore can you??!!

You'll probably hear a bit more from me as I discover problems I can't solve, but it's nice to be here.

Cheers!

G'day wortluck  *welcome*.
Nice job mate. Yep, can't beat the sound of an A10, even at idle.

and it's nice that you are.
Nice tidy bike, my first Flash was a black  (61) and had those nice deep red translucent badges like yours, I was most annoyed when after a collision the replacement badge I got was more the Rocket paler red, nice enough on a red rocket but not on my Flash

I thought I'd check out the lumpy running issues by first checking the plugs (fine) then the points.  I've never adjusted points on anything before, but it couldn't run any worse or be any poorer at starting :(  First up, the points were so closed up I couldn't actually discern when they were supposed to be open.  On consultation of my Haynes (not great but useful sometimes), I copied the position of the cam/points from the picture and adjusted to the 0.012.  First few kicks nothing, then she fired, then fired first kick on the next six occasions (when I could get the *&&%^& kickstart to engage  *problem*).  I also drained the chaincase and put in the right amount of oil - 8 fl oz.

Being encouraged by this, I thought I'd take her for a spin - what a freakin' difference, ran like a sewing machine (but much louder).  Sixty miles later I thought I'd better get back as I'd only said I'd be out for 10 mins and I needed to clean the bugs off my teeth  ;D.

Niggles left to sort are the kickstart, the semi-reliable headlamp bulb holder, and to check out a 'tinking' sound (could be pinking), oh, and a bit of a loss of power going uphill with a headwind at 75 mph (not sure if I'm expecting a bit too much of the old girl on this one).

Always open to comments and advice, especially the power loss and 'tinking' which, again seems to be from the r/h pot.

*conf* You built that bike but have never before adjusted points. What about in your '68 land Rover? ;) *smile*

When does it happen.

Possibly fuel starvation, which can cause engine damage.  Do you have two fuel taps? Open them both. Check filter gauze on the taps and in the carb banjo. Check the breather in the tank cap is clear.

Did my post get mixed up with Landys at some point *conf*

Thanks for the info about fuel, will check it out.  It only seemed to fade off when under quite a bit of load.  However, I'm of the less heavy disposition (12 stone), so this shouldn't be a factor either.

More thanks to everyone who has contributed, very, very helpful.
