Hi Sam,
Quote
You should drain the oil and replace with fresh, best to clean oil filter in the oil tank and try and clean tank best you can.

Its best to remove the oil tank and wash it out properly,
Sludge will have settled to the bottom while the bike was standing
You will probably need new tank mounting rubbers as they have probably gone soggy
The oil tank needs to be properly isolated from the frame (PITA job)

Thanks all for you replies.

What's the best thing to use for this? Would paraffin do the job?

Hello, when straying far away from the original topic title and intent ...post a new topic the correct board \ tech section etc, with a descriptive topic title.

Housekeeping \ splitting - moving posts \ locking topics \ moderation etc should not be necessary :O)
Thanks

Well, this morning I changed the oil, filled up with fuel, and took her out. Started within about 10 kicks (not bad, been standing 5 years) and with great trepidation pootled off the driveway, intending to hopefully reach the petrol station and make my way back home. With about 3 miles each way it wasn't too far to push, although I didn't particularly want to...

.... what an absolute JOY it is to ride a classic British bike. Honestly I had the biggest stupidest grin on my face the whole time. As soon as I stopped at the petrol station a chap came over to me letting me know it was the Mods v Rockers event on Sunday (King's Lynn, Tuesday Market Place, 11am) and what a lovely old bike I had, how lucky I was etc. Went home a slightly longer route to enjoy the experience a little bit more - the only thing I could compare it to is like watching High Definition TV compared to Standard Definition, everything just felt more real, authentic, and enjoyable.

Whilst I don't know what "normal" is like for a classic bike, everything felt like it was running fine, no odd noises, no smoke, felt relatively response and acceleration surprised me. Brakes were pants and it wasn't too happy to idle either, suspension not what I'm used to but adequate.

All in all, I had a fantastic time! Thanks Granddad, and thanks chaps on here for all your help thus far.  *smile*

I'm grinning just reading such a happy story. If you haven't tried it yet, you'll find the search function on this forum has more more information than most manuals. Many questions you'll have have probably already been discussed, and if not you'll get all the answers you need here.
