Fitted a new front tyre to the project bike - lost a stone in weight doing it on the hottest day of the year - bad idea !!

A bit more progress.
I'm building this project from all the A10 bits and bobs I've accumulated over the years.
I have most parts except an engine and a 4 spring clutch.

Photo bombed by my own pooch !

Finally got out on the Kwaka - 218m round trip to see my sister and brother-in-law over from Oz (Manjimup way).  Was going to take the GF, but need to test her out a bit before attempting a bigger journey.  Also, I only had yesterday and today to visit, so didn't want to risk breaking down and missing them.  As usual, never missed a beat.

GF is itching to get out for a run.  I need to know if that strange, intermittent rough running issue is solved.

Message to Bergs.  When I was down visiting, you changed the air screw setting on the carb as the bike was 'hunting'.  Ever since then it's been a bit of a pig to start - is there any connection do you think?

Jeez Jools, but I reckon you're right.

I do try and 'test her out a bit', but usually get a lot of spitting back and difficulties in getting her started.  Usually, after a bit of pampering and fettling, the situation does improve, but soon wears off and I have to go through the whole process again.  Very temperamental, and risky, for depending on, especially if I want to go for a nice ride out (ahem).  The strange, intermittent rough running is par for the course but, as long as she keeps going, things eventually turn out fine.

Thank you for listening. *pull hair out* :-:

worty when it was hunting and running a bit rich on tick over it was a warm run engine , try turning the air screw in half a turn and see how it starts  from cold , you will have to play with it regarding cold start tickling and tick over when hot, but i had these problems on mine with a 60 odd year old carb and bought a new one for betsy.

Cheers Bergs, I'll give it a shot.  My carb was also new, and transformed the starting into a one or two kick jobbie.  However, of late, it's been a good 10 kicks to ask her to fire up (this is the bike, not Sue!!)

worty maybe you should now be looking at plug and points gaps and the other general adjustments like valve clearances , or the carb might be getting  a bit bunged up in the tiny holes , but don't poke wire through them .

Aye, brand new plugs - points and valve clearances checked.  I take it carb cleaner followed by compressed air through the jets is the way to go if they're gunked up.

Does run well once going, but I did have that odd stall and (rarely) a slight power loss.  I'll give it a local blast when the weather's good again to see if it plays up.  If not, it'll be a good run around the Yorks Moors or Lincolnshire to see how it copes when hot.

Keep resting mate, and be thankful you sold Urma the Yonda.

Still recommend the W650 as a very respectful back up bike.  Low-ish centre of gravity so easy to manoeuvre!

My friend, Steve, and I rode down to the BSA Day at The Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum, We set off from Cheshire on Saturday morning and rode down to Havant in Hampshire where we stayed at The Travelodge. The round trip to Havant, on the south coast, is around 460 miles. Then on Sunday, our trip to Sammy MIller's was a round trip of about 110 miles. If you get the opportunity to visit Sammy's it is an incredible place with some really exotic bikes on display. The atmosphere is is good - less like the 'library' atmosphere of the NMM in Coventry. Our total mileage for the weekend was nearly 600 miles. Both the A10's performed faultlessly (apart from a very minor electrical issue which was fixed in 5-minutes at the Travelodge). A great weekend!

Very impressive mileage CB, I reckon I'd be aching a bit after that sort of run.

Do you go motorway or back roads?

We try to avoid motorways. We cruise at about 50 m.p.h. so we feel a bit vulnerable on roads where most others are going a lot faster than us. We did about 3 miles on the M6. We also did about 25 miles on the A34 which is almost motorway south of Newbury. Other than that we use a mix of old A-roads and B-roads which are ideal for the A10. We plan routes with a stop every 40 miles or so. I have a small tank on my A10 so I don't like to push my luck and fill up every 80 miles. So, petrol every 80ish miles and a a stop in between fill-ups works well for us.

Spot on CB!  How long did it take you to get down there.  I remember going from Stafford to Kent Custom Bike show with the lads back in the 80s.  We'd stop every 30 miles or so for a fag (or something!!!), some even had a beer or two!!!!  Would take us about 10 hours to do a 250m journey *eek*

These days, I rarely stop (except for fuel), just enjoying myself too much.  However, when the back, backside and throttle hand start to ache too much, I do take a breather for five minutes.

Great to see the old bikes pottering out and about - no better place to be than on a nicely running old Brit on a summer's day somewhere in the countryside - bliss!

We set off from Stoke on Trent at 9.00 a.m. and rode down via Eccleshall, Bridgnorth (coffee stop), Kidderminster, Worcester (fuel), Cirencester, Andover (fuel), Winchester, Petersfield, Havant. If I remember correctly, we got there at about 3.30 p.m. after filling tanks ready for the morning. We've ridden A10's down to Portsmouth on previous occasions as we've had a couple of trips to France. One trip, we toured Brittany, another trip we went to the MotoGP at Le Mans. In recent years we've also been to Assen Moto GP a few times which is easier for us as we sail from Hull which is only 120 miles from Cheshire.
