 Hello,

 Might be the camera angle, but it does not look like the magneto fiber gear is meshing with the cam gear. Might have to shine a bright light in there to look for teeth.

 With the amount of puke inside that motor, I would remove the sump plate and do my best to clean out whatever I could.

I thought the same thing Lee, you can see that the pointier end of each tooth does engage ...should it be more pronounced than this?

I have had the sump off and it was quite clean which is what is keeping me optimistic despite the interesting 'bodges' I am discovering. I have changed filters and run a gut full of new oil through it already and will do again once this adventure has ended.

 I am sure we have all had this experience when exploring new machines...it's part of the drug.

Ahhh...that is exactly why this post is thus named!

These are new to me.  Can you please point out what I am looking for? 

I am guessing your concern would be that it works too well at the wrong time?

Are you talking about that silver cylinder in the oil line?  I wondered what that was!

Thankyou for that observation, I will be removing the valve (I will replace all the lines) ASAP.

If my bikes wet sump I blame myself for not finding them enough.

great stuff UncleD I was sure I could see WASHERS --- [swarfy   ] I even went back to the picture after you said I was late for the pub and thought that's a funny looking pump casting  . back on topic again just for interest take the plugs out and spin the engine and see how your mag gear turns on a couple of revolutions, it looks interesting how those teeth are meshing, has the mag been badly slotted where the nuts hold it to the crankcase and its not fixed properly?

 Bergs.....Looks like the drink has a hereto unexplained benefit when it comes to the eyes! C'mon UncleD.....Were there any washers behind those oil pump nuts?  Or should Swarfy be booking up at Specsavers?

I have not been to the pub! swarfy you're not setting my valve timing -WASHERS!- you need to visit the pub , UncleD has removed the WASHERS and replaced them with shaken proof not stirred WASHERS!

That photo showed the shakeproof washers that were in place (I couldn't see them either).  I replaced them we new ones to ensure they bit...and then went to the pub looking for you...

(ie the Noonamah Tavern, Northern Territory)

The tips of the mag gear are black in colour and don't show up well (but you can see them silohetted above where they mesh in the photo).  They do protrude into the adjacent gear but not all the way to the bottom.

UncleD that's a better photo- looks ok to me, you are dealing with a Brit bike they even run with snapped cranks [well mine did] as for the points gap I can't point you in any other direction that hasn't been covered. my eyes might be good but they are not x-ray eyes even so I knew there were washers behind the nuts , I can hear the pub calling me
