Rear brake operating lever.
« on: 18.02. 2020 15:57 »
I noticed this morning while fitting a new drum/sprocket, that the actuating lever on my rear drum has been quite badly mullered over the years. I've seen a couple on eBay that look about right. Is there a difference between the swing arm and plunger parts? Neither listing mentions that they are for one nor t'other.
Thanks

My '53 Plunger has a relatively short, stubby straight lever, runs parallel with the backplate face, to enable the brake rod to pass through the narrow gap between the brake backplate and the suspension covers. The parts book shows a longer lever which looks straight or maybe just the way its drawn.  Can a few folks  picture what they have?

Early rod operated S/A brake uses a longer offset lever,  Draganfly's catalogue is  unusually unhelpful, showing part numbers but no description or application. Parts book illustrations for plunger and S/A long levers look similar, but have different part numbers.

Cheers Swarfy,
I've been looking at pictures of other plunger A10s and Nealy all of them have a shorter arm than mine, though they are all cranked like mine. So I'm thinking mine is from a later S/A model.
Cheers

Yes, my plunger has the longer one and it doesn't quite fit prooerly.
The correct article seems very difficult to obtain.

Try this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bsa-a10-plunger-rear-brake-arm-brake-cam-lever/293455842463?hash=item445354cc9f:g:KckAAOSwStheEmB8

Mine looks like this and is the type that came with my unmolested bike, so assume it to be correct.

This one is overpriced in my opinion, but then I'm a cheapskate.

I agree but I'm still tempted.

The Plunger and Swing Arm rear break operating levers are both cranked off set. The Plunger is the short one while the Swing Arm is longer.
The one shown by Swarfy on ebay is correct for a Plunger.
There is also another Plunger one on UK Ebay starting  at 19.99 pounds with no current bids and ends in 2 days.
Unfortunately I can't work out how to post the link. Search BSA rear brake lever, its on the 2nd page.
When I needed one they were as scarce as hens teeth so I wouldn't let this pass. IMHO.
