another tyre question

i'm running avon roadriders (am26) on the super rocket - 90/90x19 front and 100/90x19 on the back.
they handle and stick nicely but the low profile looks a bit odd and more importantly loses some ground clearance.  i scrape a lot. i'm quite hard on a tyre and like to throw it around through the twisties.

so question: what tyres are people running with a higher profile than the roadrider that suit a spirited riding/cornering style? (ie not mitas, K70, Speedmaster etc). do modern TT100s sticK? has to be 19".

Difficult to improve on what you already have. TT100s were fine for me when racing but on normal spirited road use the centre wore off rapidly. This leaves an angle with the rest of the tread which gives you a minimal contact patch when cornering in the wet. Can be a bit disconcerting.

I've also got an AM26 on the rear, and I have a TT100 on the front. Not bad in terms of stick, but the profile is indeed a bit low and you notice the small change in gearing, certainly compared to an Avon SM.
I had a TT100 on the rear too, briefly, but it lasted no time  compared to the boring old SMs I'd always had before. Quite sticky though, when it was young.
I'm in several minds as to  what's 'best'. I have TT100s on all my other 19 inchers at the moment, following a visit to Vintage Tyres in Beaulieu when I filled a car up with the things. They stick quite well on my 650SS Norton (decent handling) and on a 650 AMC twin (less decent), which are both quite a bit more powerful than my A10. But they are wearing out  . . . . quite fast  . . . . just as Black Sheep describes. That said, think I prefer them, so far, to the Roadrider, and I'm not sure what other choices there are out there.

G'day Mike.
I recently changed the 51 plunger from AM26 to new TT100's. I luv'em. I don't really care about mileage as long as they keep my ass off the ground! The 51 doesn't have much cornering clearance anyway. I still run the AM26's on the Cafe but if I scrape the pegs on it I've already fallen off!!

French made TT100s on mine but as mentioned they wear pretty fast in the middle, my problem is I lose my nerve on corners in my MIDDLE age, don't want to drop it even if it's not my fault and there's something on the road. no fear when young though

thanks for the helpful comments - sounds like tt100 worth considering as long as I don't ride on the centres too much.

re tt100 vs am26, on paper the 4.10x19  tt100 diameter is 674mm whereas the 100/90x19 am26 is 671mm - nothing in it.
i went to the local tyre shop and looked at them both: deflated, the am26 looks a little larger diameter than the tt100. but measured from rim edge to the edge of the profile (the bit touching the road when hard cornering) the tt100 is 1/2" larger or so - ie the shape is less rounded so may offer a bit more cornering clearance.

So... tomorrow I might fit a new tt100 on the rear and try it out. the shop guy, who claimed to have raced classics, thought it would work fine with the am26 still on the front... any thoughts on this? both are ply tyres but i thoughts mixing tyres/brands/profiles was generally bad..?? should i be afraid?

I would be happier with aTT100 on the front and an AM26 on the back. Has worked for me.

Yes keeping front and back a matched pair is the best way to go but in saying that the world will not end if not. A sticky (soft) tyre on the front is preferred, a rear slide can be controlled, a front slide is kiss your bum goodby.

Hi All,
I have been using Metzeler Lazer front tyres  on my SR since I built it 18 years ago
This was before Road riders were on the market.
I do or did not like the older Avons on the front of the bike,
where as the Meteler gives sharp handling, great rider feedback and grip
They work well with Avon rears,

That said I may try a pair  of  Roadriders
next set,
I have been using them as pairs on my other bikes and very happy with them

thanks for the further comments. i've put a tt100 4.10x19 on the rear with the existing am26 on the front so will try that and report back. tho it may be a while as i'll take this opportunity to try and improve the rear brakes. i think the main problem is a skimmed drum so i may have to shim the pivot as today found out i can no longer get soft new linings from the previous NZ suppliers 

John - do you mean the laser 33 or 77 or? and what do have on the rear to match it?

I have a Roadrider on the back 100/90 x 19 they work very well together
Before Road riders came on the market I used Super Venoms

Greatly depends on riding style. Not many A7/10 (or any other breed) owners corner like I do.  As mentioned I only ride for corners and the skin of my ass.
