I've got used to fitting the extended nut on magnetos but, like many, I cursed the thing before I acquired a bit more experience. If you need to change your magneto or if you're building an engine, it's worth turning a point on the end of the stud to which the extended nut fits. It could be done with a file (not in situ!) if you're careful. This makes fitting the extended nut much easier as the parts find each other much more easily.
