I think your cable doesn't have the counternut, does it? You could try to call Peter Weigelt (www.bb-weigelt.de). Tell him the details about your bike and explain him which levers you have, I think he will know which cables will fit. He's a real expert.

any other advice? Hmm, have I mentioned making the cables yourself already?

Hi Stephen,
The rear cable you have is for the earlier brake lever pointing up brake,
I had quite a job to find the shorter version as most suppliers didnt know there are two types
I think I got the right one from Johnson cables (memory is not what it should be)
