1962 Rocket Scrambler???
« on: 16.08. 2010 22:54 »
Here's one for the experts.
Is a 1962 "Rocket Scrambler" the same as a 1962 Spitfire Scrambler?  BSAOC tells me my frame is a Rocket Scrambler.
Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris

Sorry do not know the answer, but which frame do have? standard  A7 type cable back brake with full width hub front and back.

Or rod back brake with single side front hub (Rocket Gold Star).

Look forward to other replys.

Nick

Hi Nick,
It's just a bare frame that is nearly identical to my 1959 Spitfire Scrambler. It should have a cable operated brake, as it has the tab for the cable, and the holes are wide for the splined shaft.

Hi Chris
Me again, information from BSA Twin Restoration - Roy Bacon page 203

1958 A10 Rocket Scrambler start.

1960 A10 Rocket Scrambler becomes A10 Spitfire - Frame No: GA7A - 101 onwards, a standard frame will be GA7 full width hubs.

Hi Nick,
It's handy that we all have the same books!  The page number made that an easy find.  In Bacon's BSA Twins & Triples book, pages 189 and 190, he lists the models and serial number ranges, and names all of the A10 Scramblers from 1959 onwards 'Spitfire Scramblers.'  Also it was in the despatch records that my 1962 frame is a "Rocket Scrambler."  Is there a definitive answer?  The US East Coast catalogue for 1960 shows a Spitfire Scrambler.  I don't have an earlier one.

That is a very cool web page, which I have visited many times with longing!  The Rocket Goldstar Spitfire Scrambler is a very special machine and I think quite different from mine.  There is no tab for the brake cable, I assume the same goldstar style swinging arm, and other details.  The A10 frame number prefix is special too. Now I just need an engine to bolt into this sucker!

What an interesting list!  So, I am in possession of a '62 Rocket Scrambler in Flamboyant Red.  What are the specifications of this machine?  I assume it has the big valve DA10R HHC engine, but are the cycle bits different than any other spitfire scrambler or is it just painted red?

Bear in mind a couple of things:
    - Bacon's info is incomplete and shaky re the preunit Spitfires, especially
prior to 1959 models. This is because there was simply no good info published
anywhere except in the USA at that time, and Bacon had precious little to go on;
    - The Despatch Record as was available after the Factory's demise is very
poorly written, literally. It's hard to imagine some of the crude, scribbled
entries as having been made by a manufacturer as prestigious as BSA. The writers
thereof seem to have coined their own choices of names if they weren't otherwise
told which ones to use.
    -  Absent any other, more-accurate and official record, this is what we have
to use.
