Ratty looking dynamo housing

Hi all
It looks like the original finish on the dynamo body was Nickel - mine is looking a bit dodgy now (although it works fine) and I wonder what a good refinish would be - I could, I suppose, strip it and have it redone, but frankly big Bill is hard at work on the engine.
Or am I just being cheap?

Your just being like most of us here  . Short arms and deep pockets.
The problem is the case needs a good earth to the motor/frame so any coating that isn't conductive will upset the apple cart. Just give it a buff, put it back on and give it a light spray of silicon and respray after washing.

Went straight out and got the Autosol on it - Belter!! looks great
And thanks for keeping me out of another irritating problem of my own making

They were nickel plated up about 1951 and afterwards it was probably cadmium.
I get them zinc plated, not very expensive.
It's a bit difficult to remove the nickel, it is usually lifting in patches. A lot of wire wheel work and emery polishing, sometimes abrasive blasting, gets the bodies to a reasonable state for plating.
