Hi Clem,
first a warm wellcome at this forum *wave*
Why will you fit a Joe Hunt magneto????
This magneto looks like an ulcer on the bike *eek*
You need an adaptorplate to fit, and it is realy close to the enginecase.
A long time ago l have run such a Joe Hunt, I keep it as a spare item, but l gues l will never fit again.
Think about, the best way is a K2F, when reconditioned it will work for years.

cheers Klaus

hi klaus, does your hunt magneto have 2 sets of points so you can fine tune each cylinder?

My first (and only) thought was to strap it on with bungy straps....but let it slide *smile*
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

Great Idea, with two cabels you can twist the magneto for ignitiontiming *yeah*

Clem,

As Klaus said, welcome to the forum. I hope you find the help you are looking for or other advise that is useful.

Could you please tell us a little something about your bike(s) and how you came to be interested in A7/A10s and, maybe, a little about yourself (if you wish) by an introductory post as suggested here:    http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=4723.0

I run a joe hunt, quite happy with it, a very good fat spark for burning methanol.
It was a pain in the proverbial to fit as it fouled the barrel flange and had to be filed.
I also have a grooved bespoke mounting plate made so I can fit, time and if need rotate to adjust easily.
I do run it fixed at full advance. Starts easily.

I did however have problems with the coil that really annoyed me. In fact two coils failed in close succession. It appeared a bad batch. But the current one has been in there for around 4 years.

I have no issues with its appearance

This was my understanding on the Joe Hunt timing, though I was unsure. In my reading about Joe Hunt mags they have always been fixed timing, full advance even for starting. Most every other ignition system available for our bikes has an advanced/retard feature and it seems essential for starting. Try starting a bike with k2f may at 30 degrees advance or so in the retard position. Big kick back immediately of course!
But it seems to work fine with the Joe Hunt.

Glen, keep in mind in my case I bump start so kick back isnt a problem.
The engine is very tractable and lugs two blokes around. It will pootle around in the pit lane area but the 10TT9's are not set up for idle running
I have not tried this mag on a bike with a kick start.
But as Klaus mentions if you fitted an auto advance unit in the timing cover, you could have variable ignition. I bought the mag primarily because I wanted 1. a brand spanking new mag  2. The Joe Hunts have a good reputation for methanol (long slow burn) 3. I didnt care about variable timing, full advance is all I need.
My road rocket engine has had the engine cases milled to give clearance for the mag, it wasnt a simple fit although I expected it to be. Once I'd bought the mag though I wanted to see it through.
As I also mentioned having bought a new maggie for reliability it promptly failed at two successive meetings.  *problem* *pull hair out*
That was some time ago and I have forgiven it.
For a road engine I probably wouldnt go there again if I was simply stuck for a mag.
A cable advance lucas or BTH would probably be my first choice for the road.

Oh l still remenber the pain to fit this mag, and l do the simple solution and cut away the mag.
Hard to do this by a new item.

I tdrive them all, Scramber with the cable advance, Road Rocket with autmatic advane and the racer with modern BTH unit.
The BTH is easy to tune because you can lock the mag by a bolt.
But please check ignition timing always with a strobe, so you can sort out disagreement by the camring, except the BTH wich is electronical.

cheers Klaus
