torque settings?
« on: 19.05. 2017 14:19 »
New member on here, so hello all.
inherited my dad's A7SS 12 years ago now and have been keeping it rust free with FS365 and dry storage all that time, however it is going for MOT shortly and as i've had the forks off to replace head bearings and oil / oil seals etc, I cannot find a list of torque settings any where.
Am I missing something? the only ones i've seen are service sheets for A10 models and there don't seem to be many settings in those. nothing in the owners manual or haynes that i can see.
if you have any info or can point me at it i'd be really grateful (& safer)

When your bike was made a torque wrench was a mythical tool supposedly found hanging on the walls of top competition tuners.
There were none used at the factory except for the big end shells.
Thus there are no factory torque figures.
When it comes to tensioning bolts 1/3 of the home mechanics have no idea what they are doing
The other 1/3 have wrenches that are so far out that they are useless .
And the last 1/3 spend years trying to find out what they should be then sent the engine out to be assembles.

I've seen tyre fitters using torque wrenches; the wrench clicks and they give it another push to make sure, (that you will not be able to undo the fixings with your in-car tool!)  *sad2*

Perhaps not quite so arcane as thought in the old days. Note that spanner length increases correspondingly with nut size. A 3/8" WW spanner is longer than a 1/4" WW for instance. The intention there is that the same amount of effort will provide increasing torque applied to larger nut/bolt sizes. So only the ham-fisted or those using unsuitably long spanners were likely to seriously over-torque nuts and bolts.
Watch period film of bikes being built and there's not a torque spanner in sight.

The only bolts I use a tension wrench on are the big ends and the head. I use a rattle gun on the cush, clutch and lay shaft nuts. 1/4" nuts & bolts are 3 fingers, 5/16" are one grunt, 3/8" are a grunt and a bit, anything bigger gets two grunts. The steering head adjusting sleeve is by feel, just enough to eliminate any play in the bearings.

More arcane Ozzie measurements.

In addition to all this information, I think it would also be a good idea to ask about specific bolts and nuts under specific conditions. For example, certain billet conrods require 50 ft-lbs vs. the 22 ft-lbs from the A50/A65 list. Also, the years referenced in that list are meaningless with regard to our bikes. Many folks here use 30-32 ft-lbs for 3/8" cyclinder head bolts, for which the list waits until 1969 to cite that value. Additionally, when being specific you pick up additional tidbits of advice, like using thick washers under those head bolts if you have an alloy head.

thanks all for the replies. humour and helpful advice!
The A7 flew through the MoT so I thought i'd fix the slight oil leak from the back of the clutch...that mostly went ok but as I started, I thought i'd need to take the left hand exhaust off to get clear access. all went back together great apart from struggling with the brake pedal and that big spring and then I overtightened the finned exhaust clamp and snapped it. Ordered a pair online so fingers crossed.

Those finned rings are fragile

They are more for show than holding anything on. I think everyone has cracked at least one and learned from the experience, me included.   *red*

I assume you are talking about the exhaust rose up near the head if so why on earth did you undo it?

can't give a sensible answer i'm afraid. I realised after loosening it, it wasn't holding the pipe in.
