Blery bletty Blergs.

Curses, got my DIY cables today but the barrel end for the levers is too small.  The ones I got were 6.5mm but the GF's are around 9mm - bugga.  I've now ordered another cable with the correct sized barrel!

However, this led me to thinking.  What if I could find a piece of plastic tube, cut it to the length of the barrel, drill a small hole in it and pass it up the wire to the barrel forming a sort of 'coat' or shim around it.  If I can find the right size tube, this would mean that I could expand the diameter of the barrel to the correct size, at the same time as providing a 'wear buffer' between the barrel and the lever.  It would also mean I don't have to return these cables at my own expense.

Anyone see any pitfalls in my genius??

outstanding Worty get you a case of beer for that one , as was said in apocalypse now, only thing i think will happen is the tube will bed in and split reduce clutch operation and fall out , can't you just get bigger barrel nipples and solder the cable in them.

I'll be down for the beer later mate *smile*

I get the point about the splitting, etc, but some plastics/nylon is bloody tuff these days - look at the fibre wheel on the ATD.  I suppose the 'sleeve' could be fashioned from a softer metal (copper) or aluminium, etc, etc.  I have ordered a cable with the right sized end  *conf*, but I like to try out stuff to see if it works (and I always like to find uses for stuff).

I'll give it a shot in due course - watch this space. *beer* *beer* *beer*

G'day Worty.
Not a bad idea. I can't remember where/what/when I've seen that done with plastic of some sort. If it were me I'd turn it up out of alloy.

DuBro brass tubing is ideal for this... thin walled, all the right sizes, hard wearing. Just need access to a Model shop (not so easy nowadays).

Some cables were supplied with undersized barrels and nylon sleeves. Allegedly made the clutch/brake action smoother. Not such a daft idea after all.

Just making a start on the next project. I bought a B31 requiring restoration from our very own Blacksheep a couple of years ago. It's been waiting in the wings until I got my Road Rocket finished. I'm thinking of a smart touring bike with alloy head, twin instruments and goldie type running gear. It will have 356 cam, 7.25 pistons, and NOVA 5-speed touring gearbox. I don't want to refer to it as a RGS replica as I just want to build a nice looking bike which the rivet counters can spend all day picking fault with!

So, looks like things worked out quite well today.

Incredibly, I found a piece of PA6 nylon tube with exactly the correct o/d and i/d.  I did as I said and drilled a 2.5mm hole in one side of the tube, and cut the other side.  Slid the tube down the cable to the barrel, opened up the slit side and wrapped it round the barrel.  The whole assembly fitted really snugly in the lever.  Apparently, PA6 semi-rigid tube is very hard wearing, and is used in all sorts of automotive applications.  When the cable arrives with the correct size barrel, I'll use my 'adapted' cable as a pattern for it and keep it as a spare.  I'll also do what several people do and carry a spare cable (without the outer), thread it through with a screw clamp nipple as a 'get me home' fix.  Next job will be to see how my soldering skills are!

I also had a problem with my bar-end mirror - the metal expanding thingumajig fell apart, so thought about how to fix it.  The solution turned out to be a length of old car radiator hose, with a coned cup and a nut on the end.  Had to bash the whole assembly in with a bit of washing up liquid, but it's tightened up and doesn't move (I reckon rubber has better grip than metal anyway).

Always nice when a plan comes together *bright idea* *beer* *beer*
