today i met a proper geeza called Lee who took over gaggs speedo and rev counter repairs that i have used in the past, i took the speedo a couple of weeks ago and left it with his wife . it is now under the name of timeless motorcycles. i spent a couple of very interesting  hours with him and returned with betsy 2's repaired speedo. this isn't an advert but to meet such a friendly chap who has time for a complete stranger was refreshing instead of the work just being a business transaction. tomorrow i go on betsy 2 following a load of old bikers to the crem for the service of Alan who worked for Charlie Freemans motorcycles in the 60's 70's and 80's. then i might get bladdered at the wake or fit the new 32mm concentric to betsy2, if i get wasted i will fit the carb another day, thankyou for listening have nice day *beer*

I finally got my 1924 BSA 350OHV off the bench and did some test miles locally *smile*

I love it 😍

Just Beautiful John,
I rode a 1928 AJS 350 a few years ago, and it does have a special charm.

Took my MSS Velocette out for a ride to a club night. Charging now ok, oil leak cured, as for starting...

Well, I took off the tarp, had the bike moved into my shed (after evicting the foxes and clearly out 10 years of crud). Gave it a brush off and assessed what needs doing. It's a back to metal total restoration. Frame and most cycle parts solid enough to be shot and stoved - and as much oxide as I've seen. Crank, wheels turn. Bizarrely the speedo, front mudguard, horn and one rocker cover (67-0067, done me homework, thanks guys) awol. Right, where's me wire brushes, WD40 (although I find diesel better for frame, suspension nuts, leave it 24 hrs)?

Brings up a complete wreck of a Mk 1 Ford Escort van for me Bergs, for a mere £3,300 squid!
The sort of thing you'd think you'd have to pay to have taken away, but there's no accounting for taste.

i did not go to the pub, i went out on betsy and got my sweaty bum stuck to the seat so after half an hour i went home and opened the bar  *beer*  apart from that my 32mm carb is here for betsy2 ,  [ goodness me the cylinder head shop didn't half go to town on that head *dribble*  ] and i bought a cable to suit it and then after stumbling on my cable kit i bought ages ago i gave myself a good thrashing and said "and don't you do that again" !!! *bash* *bash*

Finally got out on the GF after all the house jobs I've been tasked with (the missus, ya know *eek* *eek*)

Said I'd go for a short run, however, 5 hours and 148m later over hill and dale, I rocked up at home *woo* *woo*

Given all the work I'd done recently on the bike, it was like a bit of a recommissioning, so here's what I found:

Oil cut out valve arrangement works fine, apart from a tiny weep of oil from one of the reducers which I didn't treat with PTFE tape.

Oil return was like a spit every second.

The leak at the oil tank return HAS ACTUALLY STOPPED with my 'adaptations'.  The r/h rear footpeg, exhaust and rear tyre DID NOT get covered with oil on this run - very pleased.  Also found that I could touch the oil tank with my hand and, although very warm, wasn't red hot and untouchable like it was prior to the Berger Build (hats off again for Bergs).

The bar-end mirror stayed perfectly still and, because it has a rubber mount arrangement, means vibration is dampened to the point I can actually see what's behind me *ex*

The l/h petrol tap definitely doesn't leak.

Bike ran beautifully with only a small break for petrol.  Can get a little tappety when hot, but doesn't affect performance, tickover, etc.  In fact, I actually GET a steady tickover. *eek*

Cannot figure the l/h fork oil leak at the slider.  I'm convinced there's a crack somewhere as it doesn't seem to be coming from the drain screw and isn't leaking down from the seal *????* *????*

Front brake continues to be excellent with my 'reverse' setup.

The clutch cable I soldered the ball nipple onto was fine.  There was a moment when the cable went slightly slack, but this was because the nipple had settled further into the gearbox lever recess.  Took a spare cable and solderless with me just in case.

The high bars I fitted are brilliant.  A really comfortable ride with no bad back or neck in the morning.  I also seemed to find that it was easier to chuck round corners and seemed to handle better all round.  May need to pull them down slightly but, overall, am finding position very comfortable (especially for a Beeza).

Bergs, I called on you on spec at about 2.30 but no reply.

At one point, I stopped at some lights just as a group of primary kids was walking by.  I could hear them shouting 'motorbike'.  When I looked round, they were waving and giving the 'thumbs up' - the adults weren't smiling!

Nice touch to a fabulous biking day - this is what it's all about *ex* *good3* *smile*

*woo* i have now got the 32mm conky on betsy 2 and fired her up but was fed up when she wouldn't pick up and kept dying. i thought i had set it up to run but on investigation found out i was very shy with the air screw thinking i had screwed it fully in because it got some resistance and then back 1/ 1/2 turns but because it's new i hadn't . i carefully screwed it a couple of more turns and then knew it was fully home. then screwed it out 1/ 1/2 tickled the carb { i got rid of the choke slide ] and jumped on the kicker , broom broom lovely . then set it up nicely on tick over and slowly opened it up , sounds great so now for clean plugs and a road trip with plug chops *woo* *yeah* *beer*

After I found the accident damaged head race and straightened out the lower steerer yoke I did a quick trial assembly with the new bearings and found I still had some misalignment in the forks. (handlebar and wheel axes not parallel).

Photo1. After machining a matching taper and tapping a couple of pieces of chunky stock I was starting to set the top yoke up on the operating table to administer some corrective torture in similar fashion to that given the lower yoke.  As I was musing over how much punishment the poor thing would stand I realised it was already cracked. *eek* What looks like a scratch in the powder coat on the front face is in fact a crack with similar on the inside, so that one is now in the bin!

Photos 2 & 3 Forks cleaned out, rebuilt and assembled back into the replacement, straight, top yoke using my new homemade adapter and part of an old Ford MKIV Cortina void bush tool (remember them?) works perfectly to capture the stanchion and pull it up snug into the taper. Very satisfying. I can now steer straight ahead to go straight! = Winning
