The bike is nearly run in now -

Do modern engines need running in?  I've always thought it's a case of keeping the revs below the red line.

Running in for 500 miles is stated in the handbook.

I have always treated new engines to a period of light loads and sensible RPM"s.

You can tell if a new engine is tight and you can tell when it's loosening up.

Today I played with this a bit for a friend.
Good to play with an A again, especially such a pretty one  . . .

Decent run Gb, (I still find it hard to think of a 'Bantam' as 350cc 4 banger).
What's a DRO kit?

Digital Read-Out.
Same sort of tech that modern digital calipers have. One goes on the cross-slide - it displays back and forth movement of the cutting tool - that is the Y axis. Another one goes on the bed of the lathe and displays lateral movement - X axis.

The DRO drags my prewar lathe into the 21st century.

It does seem a strange name. The bike goes a lot better than the smoky two-stroke. I understand that modern BSA will never make a smaller capacity machine so the Bantam is their baby bike.

I've just shortened the flat drivebelt for my Seneca Falls lathe... if I'm lucky might bring it into the 19th century.  *problem*

G'day Fellas.
It's been about 4 months since the old girl had been out. I was going over her and noticed I hadn't turned the battery isolater off the 14Amp. Yep, flat as a pancake. It wouldn't take a charge even when hooked up to a good battery. The local shop didn't have the same but I got the next size down 11Amp. Hooked it up and she started first kick. Went for a short run to Hampton pub and back, all good.
Yesterday I rode her to work (60Km @ 4C) it's highway all the way and she sat on 100kph all the way. I stopped at the servo across the road from work and filled her up to the brim. After work I noticed a small patch under her, it was fuel. I figured she was sitting in the sun all day so the fuel had expanded and found a way out. She was quite hard to start (10 or more kicks). She started and went about 100yards feeling like she was out of fuel! I pressed the tickler and got nothing. Remover the fuel cap and the tickler worked. Off I went but a few K's down the rode it happened again. OK cap not breathing so I backed it off 1/2 way, off we went again. A few K's further I looked down and no fuel cap and fuel all over my crotch  *eek*. I continued on with left hand over the hole but now & then had to grab the bars when overtaking. A few hundred yards from home I got pulled over by a booze bus so sat there for a few minutes (I just passed, 3 beers at Bathurst), got home covered in fuel. Deb wouldn't let me in the house so had to strip off in the shed. *eek*
Now to buy a new cap. Bugga I don't have a spare.
Cheers

Musky can I just make sure we have this straight.  Your local constabulary flagged you down, then proceeded to breath test you, even though you were riding one handed, covered in fuel, stinking of petrol, with no fuel cap in place on a brimming tank. Then let you start up and continue on in that state?

Its good that they've got the safety of you and other road users in mind at all times eh I mean as long as you were under the limit then all good! *eek*

G'day Bon.
Yes mate, I'd only had 3 schooners at Bathurst 30 minutes prior and he didn't ask to see my license or log book for the historic rego'd bike! It was only 100 yards to Maccas, he might have been hungry.
Cheers

Maybe the petrol masked the smell of booze??  Or they didn't want to keep you too long in the bus with petrol fumes everywhere?

What size is a schooner compared to a pint?

Ok, I looked it up.  Still pushing it with 3 schooners there Musky *eek*  What beer was it?

From the info I looked at, I like the way SA refers to a British pint as an 'Imperial' pint but the SA 'pint' is actually a 450ml schooner.

If I was in Aus, I'd go for the jug and drink it quick before it got warm (might be more cost-effective too?)

G'day Worty.
A schooner is 15oz, a middy is 10oz. They say 3 middys in first hour and then 1 an hour to keep you at the 0.05 limit. So yes I would have been on the limit!
Cheers

Wouldn't have got away with it in Scotland. 1 pint takes you over the limit here.
